Palo Santo (Bursera graveolens) is a tree that’s native to Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, and other South American countries. In Spanish, Palo Santo means “holy wood.” Unlike many other essential oils that come from common plants and herbs, Palo Santo trees are considered sacred by many different cultures and nations due to the historic importance of the tree’s wood in religious traditions.
The smoke of this burning wood has a distinct scent and is believed to ward off evil spirits. However, through a steam distillation process, the concentrated resins and oils can be extracted, which provide a wide range of health benefits. For thousands of years, the wood, resin, and oil have been used for medicinal purposes, including its known potential abilities to prevent oxidative stress, anticancer properties, strengthen the immune system, eliminate inflammation, reduce stress levels, treat chronic pain, soothe nerve disorders, heal the skin and ease feelings of depression.
Typically, Palo Santo oil is inhaled during aromatherapy. This method is often used while doing yoga, meditating, or performing other stress-relieving activities. The oil can also be applied to your skin. This technique is usually used for treating pain.
Also, Palo Santo is widely used to repel mosquitos. It’s also said to deter ants, termites, and flies.
