Palo Santo (Bursera graveolens) is a tree that’s native to Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, and other South American countries. In Spanish, Palo Santo means “holy wood.” Unlike many other essential oils that come from common plants and herbs, Palo Santo trees are considered sacred by many different cultures and nations due to the historic importance of the tree’s wood in religious traditions.
The aroma of a wood has a distinct scent and is believed to ward off evil spirits. However, through a steam distillation process, the concentrated resins and oils can be extracted, which provide a wide range of benefits.
Typically, Palo Santo oil is inhaled during aromatherapy. This method is often used while doing yoga, meditating, or performing other stress-relieving activities.
Also, Palo Santo is widely used to repel mosquitos. It’s also said to deter ants, termites, and flies.
